About Us

'Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great.
You can be that great generation.'

Nelson Mandela

The Great Generation is a young and forward thinking organisation which mobilises the agency of individuals, civil society and private companies to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals. The Great Generation aims to capture the spirit of giving that followed the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004 and maintain this momentum so that more resources are channelled towards long-term development in all parts of the world, where communities are in need. Volunteering with The Great Generation gives you a unique opportunity to take part in a sustainable development project, where you get to see your donation in action, helping to invest in local infrastructure and microfinance ventures.

Our mission:

A world free of poverty, hunger and disease.

Our vision:

To help tackle world poverty, by encouraging and sustaining charitable giving.

What we do:

Create opportunities for people to do ‘hands-on’ work and support positive change in areas where it is needed most.

Our projects:

Our projects provide a dynamic environment in which volunteers learn by doing and are able to give their time and money to help local people. It is our aim for The Great Generation participants to return home with a deeper understanding of how communities are affected by disaster and poverty, and that this will inspire them to carry on making a difference.

The Great Generation works closely with local organisations and individuals to identify volunteer projects that are community-driven and tackle real needs.

Each of our projects lasts one to two weeks and involves a team of up to 12 volunteers, whose individual skills, experiences and enthusiasm enable them to achieve a huge amount in just a short time. Volunteers may undertake anything from painting houses and helping families to create home gardens, through to running sports competitions or children’s programmes.

How we work:

We believe that local people must be at the centre of change. Their engagement and commitment is essential for ensuring that small actions are translated into lasting improvements in people’s quality of life. Therefore, we support and complement the efforts of local organisations which have already built strong relationships with local people.

Our key aim is not to duplicate or set-up new projects that cannot be sustained. We work with a range of partner organisations, both in the UK and overseas, so that their assets and expertise are brought together to achieve common goals.

As far as possible, we ensure that all resources are channelled straight into local communities and supporting local businesses by buying food, tools and equipment in the areas where we work.

In the long term:

Volunteers remain connected to local communities through their own donations, which are used on the ground to improve infrastructure, set-up and expand businesses through microfinance schemes and supply simple solutions to everyday problems.
