Calder High fundraising case study

Calder High School and The Great Generation became partners in December 2007 and plans were made for 16 students and staff to take part in a tailored project in Uganda in July 2008. A total of £16,000 had to be raised in just over 6 months.

The fundraising:

Throughout the lead up to the project students and staff met once a week in their lunch hour to come up with new and innovative ideas to raise the necessary funds. Here are just some of the activities that took place:
  • Proceeds from the Non-Uniform Day went towards the project
  • Local businesses were approached for sponsorship
  • Students spent the afternoon braving the cold and washing teachers' cars
  • The drama group performed Say Goodbye to Satchwell Road with proceeds from the audience and a raffle going towards the project
  • Slices of a chocolate cake were sold and tasters were challenged to discover the hidden ingredients in the family recipe
  • Students took part in a sponsored crawl!
  • Ready, Steady, Cook!... Staff members volunteered to be chefs for the event and cooked their favourite dishes on a budget of £3.00. Eight contestants cooked, stirred, marinated, grilled and grated in just over one hour to produce a fantastic array of dishes. The event was covered by the Halifax Courier
  • Calder High's Assistant Head teacher did a sponsored tandem skydive
  • A Family Quiz Night and Auction was held on the school premises. The highest bid for the auction went towards a week in Normandy
  • Row to Africa - over the course of 3 days students formed groups of 10 rowers who were challenged to compete against each other to see how far they could row (on machines)
  • Year 7 Disco - Well over 100 pupils attended and took part in limbo dancing and strutting their stuff on the dance floor
  • Calder High School's Got Talent - Based on the huge success of Britain's got Talent, Calder High held their very own Calder High School's got talent. The students’ talents ranged from musical performances to dancing, football tricks and martial arts displays
  • African Nations Inter-Form Cup - Students took part in a football competition alongside other events such as face painting and limbo dancing
  • Jeroboam of Champagne - A raffle was held for a Jeroboam of Laurent Perrier Champagne
