Post Volunteer Project Update - direct from Uganda!

In July 2009, The Great Generation took a group of students and teachers from Calder High out to volunteer on a community development project. The students and staff helped to develop environment and hygiene initiatives with our Expert Partner and had an amazing yet challenging time.

Following their time spent at the project, we received an update from our Expert Partner - as below:

• The Kasaala gardens are now supplying food to all the compounds,

• 68 clients have been trained since

• 40 households have been impacted by the project

• The whole garden is now planted – producing mainly maize and bananas

• The majority of the seeds which were brought from the UK  unfortunately did not germinate. Conditions have been very severe with long dry drought periods

• The Expert Partner is looking into getting a water tank, or drilling a bore hole in order to have a constant water source

In addition, the Project Leader for our Expert Partner has been in Nairobi establishing an outreach NGO similar to the current model being used that is focusing on homecare provision and income generating activities (including micro-finance).
