Todmorden High Tailored Project 2008
Brazil17 October - 1 November 2008About this project
Todmorden High students and their teachers will be spending two weeks on an exciting project working with former street children in Brazil. Time will be spent exploring livelihood opportunities for these young people and ways to improve their futures. Volunteers will spend time learning about and discussing the issues facing financially disadvantaged communities in Brazil. Supported by The Great Generation staff and our expert partners, the students (and their teachers!) will learn more about the use of grass roots business and finance tools to alleviate poverty.
This project is supported by v Charity which has awarded The Great Generation a grant to assist with the promotion of our volunteering activities with young people aged 16 - 25.
Who should take part in this project?
This project is a tailored project for Todmorden High Students and their teachers. We believe that all volunteers have life experience, skills and knowledge which can be of value to a developing community and The Great Generation will look to utilise these experiences, skills and knowledge as much as possible in order to work with our expert partners and the local community to find creative solutions to meet local needs.
Information about taking part in this project
The Great Generation has a wide range of UK based partners that help us in the work we do in poor and developing communities. In order for their students to take part in this project, Todmorden High signed a partnership agreement with The Great Generation and the students, teachers and parents are fundraising for the students to take part in this project. The fundraising amount covers flights, food, local transport and accommodation, which we source from the local community.
The fundraising also goes towards the community in two ways. One part helps to set up a microfinance fund in the community, which is used to help local people create livelihoods for themselves. The second part is provided as an infrastructure grant to the community such as a water tank or sports equipment.
The students and teachers must take part in two half-day briefings to help prepare them for their project and to learn more about the community they will be living in for the two weeks.
