Capacity Building Project - ESCP-EAP
Uganda18 July - 1 Aug 2009 (2 weeks)About this Project
This year The Great Generation took the first group of students from its partner ESCP-EAP to Uganda on a capacity building project. The 6 student volunteers spent 2 weeks in the capital of Uganda, Kampala, working closely with an Expert Partner that works to improve the lives of those affected by HIV/AIDS in impoverished areas of Kampala. 2009 will see a new group of students and staff from ESCP-EAP take part in a project with the same Expert Partner in Uganda. The group will spend two weeks helping the vocational training centre, which the organisation runs, to become a self-sustainable enterprise.
The project will enable the ESCP-EAP volunteers to see their skills utilised for the benefit of this community-based organisation and promote the creation of livelihood initiatives through investments in microfinance.
Who should take part in this project?
If you are a student or staff member of ESCP-EAP campus in Europe you may sign up to take part in this project.
Information about taking part in this project
To take part in this project we need ESCP-EAP students and staff to fill in a volunteer registration form. To confirm a place on the project you will need to transfer a £100 non-refundable donation. Volunteers are asked to fundraise a set amount of money that covers your flights, food, local transport and accommodation. Most of the services we use on the project, such as accommodation, food and transport, are sourced from the community you will be working in to help stimulate the local economy.
The fundraising also goes towards the community in two ways. One part helps to set up a microfinance fund in the community, which is used to help local people create livelihoods for themselves. The second part is provided as an infrastructure grant to the community such as a water tank or sports equipment.
Briefings
Volunteers must attend two half-day briefings. It is important that you attend both briefings as we use this time to do planning for the project as well as getting you prepared for the community you will be volunteering in for the two weeks.
