Calder High Community Development Project
Uganda2 weeks, 18 July - 1 August 2009About this project
In 2008, The Great Generation took a group of students and teachers from Calder High out to volunteer on a community development project. The students and staff helped to develop environment and hygiene initiatives with our Expert Partner and had an amazing yet challenging time.
In 2009 we will take a new group of students out to the same Expert Partner looking to build on the work that has already been started as well as looking at new areas where the volunteers can apply their skills and time.
Supported by The Great Generation staff and our expert partner, volunteers will look at ways to support people into livelihood opportunities through microfinance.
Information about taking part in this project
This project is open only to Calder High students. To take part in this project students need to sign up at school. Volunteers will then need to fill in a registration form, and transfer a £100 non-refundable donation that helps to secure their place on the project.
Calder High students are asked to fundraise a set amount of money that covers your flights, food, local transport and accommodation. Most of the services we use on the project, such as accommodation, food and transport, are sourced from the community you will be working in to help stimulate the local economy.
The fundraising also goes towards the community in two ways. One part helps to set up a microfinance fund in the community, which is used to help local people create livelihoods for themselves. The second part is provided as an infrastructure grant to the community such as a water tank or sports equipment.
Calder High students will attend two half-day briefings, which will help you to prepare for your project and start to learn about the community you will be living in for the two weeks.
