Community Development Project India - Open
New Delhi, India30 Aug - 12 Sept 2009 (2 weeks)Volunteer your Creative Talent in New Delhi, India
Seeking 6-12 volunteers to collaborate on a community development 'Arts' project.
Interested in volunteering your skills and creative abilities to spark imagination and inspiration?
What to expect?
Volunteers working with our expert partners in New Delhi will deliver a Creative arts & crafts, and music & movement programme over a two week period to a group of children from the impoverished slum area of the local community. The focus will be on having fun and learning at the same time. Activities will help to improve the children's creative thinking, spatial and personal awareness, concentration and communication.
The programme will involve working with two groups of children:
-
children with learning and physical disabilities that will attend the lessons to help them communicate and create art as a means of self expression and a way to earn a small income.
-
children from the impoverished slum communities that already attend extra tuition lessons in english, math, computer science.
As a volunteer you will spend time working with the teachers delivering workshops 'Teaching the Teachers' in which you will have the opportunity to offer:
-
new ideas and techniques for delivering art, craft, music & movement programmes.
-
skills on how to manage and communicate with children who have learning disabilities
Supported by The Great Generation staff and our Expert Partner, volunteers will also look at ways to support local people into livelihood oppportunities through microfinance.
Who should take part in this project?
This is an open project and we are looking for people with a range of different skills they can bring to this project. All volunteers are welcome.
Information about taking part in this project
If you are interested in taking part in this project you will need to fill in a volunteer registration form and provide two references.
To confirm an initial offer of a place on the project you will need to transfer a £120 non-refundable donation. Volunteers are asked to fundraise a set amount of money that covers your flights, food, local transport and accommodation. Most of the services we use on the project, such as accommodation, food and transport, are sourced from the community you will be working in to help stimulate the local economy.
The fundraising also goes towards the community in two ways. One part helps to set up a microfinance fund in the community, which is used to help local people create livelihoods for themselves. The second part is provided as an infrastructure grant to the community such as a water tank or sports equipment.
Briefings
Volunteers must attend two half-day briefings. It is important that you attend both briefings as we use this time to do planning for the project as well as getting you prepared for the community you will be volunteering in for the two weeks.
