projects in action button Community Development Project India - School New Delhi, India23 October - 7 November 2009

In 2009 we will take a new group of high school students as part of our partnership with V Charity to India to work on a community development project with our Expert Partner based in New Delhi that works with impoverished street children.

This project will build on the work of our expert partner and help these children improve themselves through education and vocational opportunities. This expert partner helps create independent young people who can take control of their situations by becoming educated and finding employment. Students will be supporting this work by teaching the children simple English skills. They will also use sport as a means of learning.

Supported by The Great Generation staff and our Expert Partner, volunteers will look at ways to support local people into livelihood opportunities through microfinance.

Information about taking part in this project

This project is for students from one of our participating School Partnerships.

To take part in this project students need to sign up at their school. Students will then need to fill in a registration form and transfer a £100 non-refundable donation that helps to secure their place on the project.

Students are asked to fundraise a set amount of money that covers your flights, food, local transport and accommodation. Most of the services we use on the project, such as accommodation, food and transport, are sourced from the community you will be working in to help stimulate the local economy.

The fundraising also goes towards the community in two ways. One part helps to set up a microfinance fund in the community, which is used to help local people create livelihoods for themselves. The second part is provided as an infrastructure grant to the community such as a water tank or sports equipment.

Students attend two half-day briefings, which will help them to prepare for their project and start to learn about the community they will be living in for the two weeks.
