Teaching English to Bedouin Guides in Jordan
JordanJune 2010 (2 weeks)About this project
This is a unique volunteering project, spending two weeks in Jordan suppoting our Expert Partner in their initiative of supporting the local community by increasing the English skills of local Bedouin guides in the Dana Nature Reserve of Wild Jordan.
The project will enable local guides to sell their services to local markets and share their innate knowledge of the landscape with visitors to the region. In strengthening their language skills, the guides will be able to create a sustainable income for themselves, increasing the likelihood that they can preserve their unique Bedouin way of life and continue to live and work in the reserve. The project will also see volunteers creating training resources for people employed at Wild Jordan, to continue to deliver English training to the guides throughout the year.
Supported by The Great Generation staff and our expert partner, volunteers will also look at ways to support people into livelihood opportunities through microfinance.
Who should take part in this project?
This is an open project and we are looking for people with either of the following skills: Presentation/group work skills; English Teaching; TEFL teaching; General teaching
If you are interested in taking part in this project you will need to fill in a volunteer registration form and provide two references.
To confirm an initial offer of a place on the project you will need to transfer a £120 non-refundable donation. Volunteers are asked to fundraise a set amount of money that covers your flights, food, local transport and accommodation. Most of the services we use on the project, such as accommodation, food and transport, are sourced from the community you will be working in to help stimulate the local economy.
The fundraising also goes towards the community in two ways. One part helps to set up a microfinance fund in the community, which is used to help local people create livelihoods for themselves. The second part is provided as an infrastructure grant to the community.
Briefings
Volunteers must attend two half-day briefings. It is important that you attend both briefings as we use this time to do planning for the project as well as getting you prepared for the community you will be volunteering in for the two weeks.
