projects in action button Model Garden Project in Uganda Kampala, UgandaAutumn 2010 (2 weeks)

About this project

The Great Generation has developed a programme called The Model Home Garden which will enable clients of our Expert Partner, KHC, who are both living with or affected by HIV Aids, TB and Cancer to produce food for their families and to sell at the market. Sub Saharan Africa, where Uganda lies, bears the heaviest burden of HIV/Aids. One of the major issues that faces the poor living with HIV and Aids is ensuring a secure supply of food for themselves and their families. As a volunteer you will provide support interms of both livelihoods and healthy lifestyles, and ensure that people are able to become self sufficient. The model garden will be replicated across client groups and target areas.

Who should take part in this project?
This is an open project and we are looking for people with a range of different skills they can bring to this project. All volunteers are welcome.

Information about taking part in this project
If you are interested in taking part in this project you will need to fill in a volunteer registration form and provide two references.

To confirm an initial offer of a place on the project you will need to transfer a £120 non-refundable donation. Volunteers are asked to fundraise a set amount of money that covers your flights, food, local transport and accommodation. Most of the services we use on the project, such as accommodation, food and transport, are sourced from the community you will be working in to help stimulate the local economy.

The fundraising also goes towards the community in two ways. One part helps to set up a microfinance fund in the community, which is used to help local people create livelihoods for themselves. The second part is provided as an infrastructure grant to the community such as a water tank or sports equipment.

Briefings
Volunteers must attend two half-day briefings. It is important that you attend both briefings as we use this time to do planning for the project as well as getting you prepared for the community you will be volunteering in for the two weeks.
