Westminster English Language & Model Garden Project
UgandaSummer 2010 (2 weeks)About this project
This project involves working with young entrepreneurs who have completed study at a grass-roots vocational training centre. Volunteers will document their stories and uncover the incredible journeys these trainees have made to become qualified and independent. An additional element of the project is to develop a model garden at the centre in order to grow produce for consumption, use by the training centre staff and sale at local markets.
Students are asked to fundraise a set amount of money that covers your flights, food, local transport and accommodation. Most of the services we use on the project, such as accommodation, food and transport, are sourced from the community you will be working in to help stimulate the local economy.
The fundraising also goes towards the community in two ways. One part helps to set up a microfinance fund in the community, which is used to help local people create livelihoods for themselves. The second part is provided as an infrastructure grant to the community.
Students attend two half-day briefings, which will help them to prepare for their project and start to learn about the community they will be living in for the two weeks.
