projects in action button P2P Exchange and Environmental Cleaning 16th Aug - 27th Aug 2010 (2 weeks)

About this project

In 2010 we will take a new group of students out to our Expert Partner to develop the knowledge base of its young people, and look to set up a programme where young people from the UK can work with their peers in Uganda, sharing ideas, knowledge and experience on living healthy and empowered lifestyles. In addition, to help maintain healthy lifestyles, the volunteers will work with their Ugandan counterparts on cleaning the immediate community environments. They will also devise an environmental awareness poster campaign to ensure the whole community is engaged on an ongoing basis.

Supported by The Great Generation staff and our expert partner, volunteers will look at ways to support people into livelihood opportunities through microfinance.

Information about taking part in this project

To take part in this project students need to sign up at school. Volunteers will then need to fill in a registration form, and transfer a £100 non-refundable donation that helps to secure their place on the project.

Students are asked to fundraise a set amount of money that covers your flights, food, local transport and accommodation. Most of the services we use on the project, such as accommodation, food and transport, are sourced from the community you will be working in to help stimulate the local economy.

The fundraising also goes towards the community in two ways. One part helps to set up a microfinance fund in the community, which is used to help local people create livelihoods for themselves. The second part is provided as an infrastructure grant to the community such as a water tank or sports equipment.

Students will attend two half-day briefings, which will help you to prepare for your project and start to learn about the community you will be living in for the two weeks.
