projects in action button ESCP Europe project 2011 Kampala, Uganda2 weeks, start of July 2011 (exact dates TBC)

This will be the fourth time The Great Generation delivers a project in partnership with the London based European Business School - ESCP Europe (website).

Student for ESCP Europe will be working in partnership with Kyebando Vocational Training Centre (KVTC) (website) based in the slum area of Kyebando, Uganda.

Project details:

KVTC seeks to mitigate the psychosocial and economic impact of HIV and AIDS exacerbated by factors such as poverty, unemployment, gender bias, poor parenting, lack of education, skills and access to health services. It is through the provision of training in vocational skills that KVTC aims to aid community development.

In 2010, students from ESCP Europe helped capacity build KVTC through delivery of training in marketing and communication. They also provided significant support to KVTC’s income generating Catering Enterprise through the creation of a strategic, targeted Business Plan.

This project will build on the success of the 2010 project and will underpin the Catering Enterprise Business plan. It will deliver the next iteration of business planning for the catering enterprise, review progress made so far, suggest solutions to the challenges encountered so far, and review how the business plan can be scaled to the other income generating enterprise, the tailoring business.

Additionally leadership and skills training to enable effectively, sustainable functioning of the organisation on a day-to-day basis will be provided.

Students are asked to fundraise a set amount of money that covers flights, food, local transport and accommodation. Most of the services we use on the project, such as accommodation, food and transport, are sourced from the community you will be working in to help stimulate the local economy.

The fundraising also goes towards the community in two ways. One part helps to set up a microfinance fund in the community, which is used to help local people create livelihoods for themselves. The second part is provided as an infrastructure grant to the community.

Students attend two half-day briefings, which will help them to prepare for their project and start to learn about the community they will be living in for the two weeks.
