Calder High School Project 2011
Kampala, Uganda2 weeks, 16 - 31 JulyThis will be the fourth year The Great Generation delivers a project in partnership with the Yorkshire based Calder High School (website).
Project details:
On project the students will engage with people of different ages and from many different backgrounds.
The first part of the project will see students working with the Friends for Life team at Reach Out Mbuya (website) engaging with students and young people for the Kampala community. Likely activities include a cultural exchange programme incorporating workshops on life in the UK and the setting up of a community library.
Students will also be working at one of the outreach clinics located about an hour and a half north of Kampala. They will work on the established community model garden based at the clinic and will go to members homes in the community to establish new sites. The model gardens provide a source of sustenance and livelihood for Reach Out clients, and are a useful learning tool for all Reach Out clients.
Students are asked to fundraise a set amount of money that covers flights, food, local transport and accommodation. Most of the services we use on the project, such as accommodation, food and transport, are sourced from the community you will be working in to help stimulate the local economy.
The fundraising also goes towards the community in two ways. One part helps to set up a microfinance fund in the community, which is used to help local people create livelihoods for themselves. The second part is provided as an infrastructure grant to the community.
Students attend half-day briefings, which will help them to prepare for their project and start to learn about the community they will be living in for the two weeks.
