projects in action button La Swap Sixth Form Project 2011 Njeru, Uganda2 weeks, 16 - 31 July

This will be the second project The Great Generation delivers in partnership with the LaSwap Sixth Form (website).

Project details:

Building on the success of the 2010 summer project with St Francis Health Care Services (website), the students from LaSwap will be working in the community of Njeru, Uganda.

In 2010 the students established a beautiful and well though-out library. This year the students will bring more books and hope to take them into the local and establish reading clubs. This will form part of the peer to peer exchange and cultural learning programme that St Francis Health Care Services runs and will see the students engaging with people from a variety of back grounds and ages.

Students are asked to fundraise a set amount of money that covers flights, food, local transport and accommodation. Most of the services we use on the project, such as accommodation, food and transport, are sourced from the community you will be working in to help stimulate the local economy.

The fundraising also goes towards the community in two ways. One part helps to set up a microfinance fund in the community, which is used to help local people create livelihoods for themselves. The second part is provided as an infrastructure grant to the community.

Students attend half-day briefings, which will help them to prepare for their project and start to learn about the community they will be living in for the two weeks.
